Youth leaders fighting for a better world

This year’s United Nations Young Leader Challenge is a celebration of young people who have made significant contributions to society over the past two years — and who are leading change today in some of the most urgent issues of our time. On June 8th 2022 we are hosting this YLC event in partnership with Make Inclusive Futures, which aims to galvanize the youth to take bold steps toward making the SDGs a reality by 2030. We invite you to join us on Thursday 18th June at 10:00 am GMT — a day dedicated to celebrating those inspiring individuals who are changing the face of tomorrow.

The theme for our 2023 YLC is “Reimagining Progress toward Our Shared Future.” It celebrates this year’s leaders and calls upon them to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to ensure that all the goals of the SDGs are achieved.

The challenge is being held virtually this year as part of the Covid-19 pandemic, but it has been designed to be accessible to everyone. To help you get involved we will also be sharing information about how you can make your voice heard through social media and other channels.

The goal of the week is to share stories about progress being made towards the SDGs. You can share your own story or write one that highlights someone else’s work, highlighting the key achievements of others in their field.

The first ten days of the competition are free, so why not jump straight into building impact? Use #YoungLeaderChallenge2022 to engage and get inspired!

It was important for me to raise awareness of my team while keeping it light, because we knew that the more we talked about it, the more we could learn. But when I saw a post from somebody asking why they were doing well and I realized that it had something to do with feedback from peers and knowing that there was nothing wrong with you, it just really gave me hope that we can improve together.

Another example is hearing about another organisation’s initiative that had been working together for many years and seeing how much they’re already accomplishing and having conversations like that around how to keep going. That’s always exciting to hear and makes you feel even better about yourself personally.

I’ve always believed that education is the most powerful way to build self-esteem and confidence. So I’m very proud that the organization I work for offers mentoring, which empowers underrepresented members of the community to reach their full potential. If anyone asks if that’s happening for you, know this isn’t something that’s only available to certain organisations.

One thing I love about this challenge is that it brings people together from different backgrounds and cultures in such unique ways. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, we came together and created amazing opportunities for each other to connect, whether that's video chats, phone calls, emails, or connecting online. So I’m happy that we managed to make these connections and share experiences..
